Lymm Festival 2013

Tel: Bernard Cromarty 01204 571167 or 07973 390936

Lymm Festival Committee changed this year's Festival dates in October 2012 (after we had finalised our bookings), so we had no other option than to cancel our plans.

However, we will still be running the lunchtime session in the Cliff Garden at the Spread Eagle on Saturday 22nd June, and there will be a Charity Concert in the evening.

Beverley Festival (amongst others) is being held from Friday 21st June through to Sunday 23rd June, so we have decided to keep our Open Mic, Songwriting Competition and Double Bill Evening Concert on the original weekend (Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th June) to avoid clashing. See details below.

All our events will be at the  Spread Eagle  in Lymm Centre.

Steve Turner

Steve Turner

Lymm Folk Club's festival opener for 2013...

Residents' support was from Stewart, Janice, Nick & Lin and Bernard, with Nelson Peach as our Pre-Raffle-ites... The Food Fest was in full swing outside, which added to the party atmosphere!

An excellent evening from Steve, with many of our regulars and a few new faces present!

As ever, Steve demonstrated his mastery of the English concertina, with tunes on the mandolin and tenor banjo, and occasional accompaniment on the cittern. Steve sang 'The Isle of St. Helena' as a request, with plenty of other chorus songs for an enthusiastic audience to sing.

CHARITY CONCERT

featuring

Nelson Peach,  Nick & Lin Tysoe  and  Bernard Cromarty

A sneaky practice before everyone arrives!

Nick and Lin on top form!

Nelson Peach never fail to please!

Not as good a turn-out as we'd hoped, but St. Rocco's Hospice will be pleased with the £200.00 we raised, no doubt!

It was great to see the Perfectly at Home String Band once again - they made their first appearance at Lymm Festival back in 2008 (29th June) at the Acoustic Concert!

If anyone has a photo or two of either of Bernard's sets, could we have them? It's difficult to take photos whilst performing, y'see!

Festival Singers Night

Tonight's entertainment will be provided by whoever turns up! Lymm Folk Club is blessed with a wide variety of singers and musicians, but you can come along and listen if you don't feel like performing! We do ask that the audience doesn't walk around or chat whilst each performer takes their turn, though - it's only fair!

Oh, and for this week only, admission is FREE!

ACOUSTIC MUSIC CONCERT

We will have twenty minutes each from our pre-booked performers (maximum of six), with a raffle break somewhere!

As with the Songwriting Competition, we will draw the running order by 'raffle' as each slot comes up. This is to discourage people from only turning up in time for their own slot, as no-one will know when their turn will be. Quite simply, anyone who isn't available when their slot is drawn forfeits their opportunity!

We will be at the Spread Eagle from around 1.00pm setting up the PA, but there will be no sound checks beforehand - the sound check is part of your slot. Again, this is to discourage people from extravagant requirements - there will be vocal microphones, instrument microphones, DI boxes and XLR lines to choose from.

In 2011 we introduced a competetive element which proved to be popular - the audience were asked to vote for their favourites. This year. the 'winner' will be offered a club gig on Thursday 1st August 2013 - non-negotiable, so if you're not available on that date we'll simply ask the runner-up, and so on! The audience will vote for three in order of preference, the first choice being given three points. Hopefully this should avoid a tie-break situation! A tie may be settled by the actual number of votes a performer has received in total, or on the whim of the Organiser...!

We have eight 'slots' in total - the Jake Thackray tribute concert has been relocated to a alternate venue, so we have reverted to our original plan!

Who is on the list?

Doreen Lehmann

Three years ago I thought I might try to write a poem or two and now I love writing poetry. A former Head of an Infant & Nursery School, I am now retired and see the world quite differently.

I belong to the Warrington Poetry Group, which meets each month. We share our poems and learn from each other. In the same way Lymm Folk Club has welcomed me as a friend and poet. Such a special privilege on Singers' Night to bring my poems to life.

Hopefully I shall continue to improve and give pleasure to anyone who is happy to listen.

Jon Budworth

My name is Jon Budworth and I hail from the mean streets of Leigh, Lancashire.

I got into folk music seriously a couple of years ago after chancing upon a video of John Renbourn playing English Dance. To say I was blown away would be an understatement! I immediately set out on the long and arduous road of learning to play it. This led me on to discovering other fantastic artists such as Richard Thompson and my all time hero Nic Jones. I now have a sizeable repertoire of solo acoustic songs and instrumentals, both covers and originals.

I'm really looking to raise my profile in 2013 and the year is going well! In January I played a very well received set at Celtic Connections in front of a large and enthusiastic audience. 'Jons Jig' was used as the theme tune for the FolkRise show on UKFolkMusic.com. One of my songs has been chosen to go on FATEA magazine's summer showcase album. All of the tracks from my new EP 'Time Machine' have received significant airplay and on 13th May I performed my first in studio live session on Ali O' Brien's 'Sounds of Folk' show.

John Every

From an early age I was into guitar / folk music and was a regular visitor to clubs from the late sixties/early seventies onwards to see Michael Chapman, Bert Jansch, John Martyn and the like. Over the years my taste has broadened to encompass all kinds of popular music but folk is at the roots.

After years of enjoying other people's music, I have recently started making my own and writing songs - songs which reflect on the human condition. My hope is that other people will enjoy them and/or want to sing them.

When her busy life permits, my modest performing talent is greatly enhanced by my daughter Christine's singing.

John Condy

John Condy has been attending folk clubs on a regular basis since 2006. His repertoire consists mainly of contemporary songs from both sides of the Atlantic, though he has been known to play a few traditional songs - and even a few self-penned ones!!

He plays guitar, slide guitar, harmonica, mandolin and 5 string banjo. He also played bass on a couple of tracks on Jean Finney's Jigsaw album project and contributed backing vocals to the song 'One Day The Sun's Gonna Shine' on Zoe Mulford's album, Bonfires. He was honoured to play harmonica with Zoe on 2 songs at the launch gig for that album in 2010.

John is a regular at Lymm and Sale Folk Clubs, and often pops up elsewhere, too!

Fair Play

We are Ruth, Kath and Stan and relatively new to playing and performing music. We met at Lymm Folk Club in 2009 and decided to get together, performing our first songs in April 2009. We like English Traditional music, also American Traditional and some contemporary music.

Most of all we really enjoy playing music together, especially with an appreciative audience!

Song and Story

Song and Story are Dorothy Fryman and 'Monologue John' Bartley - Dorothy sings the songs, and John tells the stories!

Michael Burns

A songwriter and Lymm Folk Club regular - Michael writes songs about subjects very close to his heart, yet written in such a way that his audience can easily empathise with them.

"My songs and tunes are about my native North East, my life in the Northwest, and my Irish roots, and the wonderful people I have met while teaching English to Adults. I believe in the brotherhood of man."

SONGWRITING COMPETITION

If you wish to participate in our annual songwriting competition, please download an Entry Form and post it, or hand it in on any Thursday club night - closing date has been extended to Tuesday 25th June 2013, as a small number of 'slots' are still available.

As with the Acoustic Music Concert, we will draw the running order by 'raffle' as each slot comes up. This is to discourage people from only being in the room for their own slot, as no-one will know when their turn will be. Quite simply, anyone who isn't available when their slot is drawn forfeits their opportunity!

OUR RESIDENTS

Lymm Folk Club is blessed with a fine complement of 'Residents' - these are the performers who provide tireless support throughout the year for our guests!

They are:

Bernard Cromarty: Bernard took over from Stewart as Club Organiser in December 2010. There aren't many instruments Bernard doesn't play... and he sings, too. His material ranges from traditional, contemporary, Music Hall and just plain daft!

Stewart Lever: Stewart has now 'retired' as club organiser... he sings and plays guitar. His material ranges from traditional, covers and self-penned.

Nelson Peach: the club's own super-group! They are Lesley & Rick Nelson and Richard Peach, whose material ranges from traditional, covers and the occasional self-penned song, along with a few tunes for good measure! Lesley plays flute, whistle, guitar and triangle, Rick plays guitar, cittern and mandolin, and Richard plays fiddle, mandolin, guitar and banjo - and they all sing!

Nick & Lin

Nick and Lin: Nick Tysoe plays guitar and banjo, and Lin plays autoharp, mandolin and guitar, and they both sing. Their material is predominantly American traditional and 'Old Timey'.

Janice Bell

Janice Bell: Assisted by Stewart and Pepper Street (she occasionally performs with the band), Janice was promoted to club resident during Lymm Festival 2012. Her repertoire is quite wide and varied, and she's rapidly become a favourite at club Singers Nights.

Bob and Kate: Although Bob and Kate aren't performers, their support is just as important - if not more so! Bob collects the door money, and Kate sells the raffle tickets... without them, the club wouldn't function!
